This certification upholds the strictest criteria for biodiversity conservationto be certified by the Bird Friendly program, producers must maintain a minimum of 40 percent shade coverage over their crop, have at least 11 tree species on their land with 60 percent of the species being native to the region, and
Around 4,072 Bird Friendly farmers in 12 countries grow 34 million pounds of coffee annually. The program recently expanded to cocoa, too, to further its impact. Choosing Bird Friendly certified coffees means supporting a more biodiverse, sustainable world.
Although not an official certification at this time, coffee labeled Shade-Grown simply means producers provide shade for coffee plants in order to mimic natural forest ecosystems and promote biodiversity. As a label, it is very similar to the Smithsonians Bird-Friendly certification program.
Almost no Plantation or Estate coffees are shade-grown, as those owners have sacrificed environment to efficiency. Not all organic coffees are shade-grown, either (on some farms and cooperatives only a portion of their crop is shade-grown).
What Does Certified Coffee Mean? Certified coffees take one or more aspects of sustainability into account. This means the coffee was grown in a healthy environment, is economically viable for farmers, promotes fairness among farmers and workers, or all three aspects.
The Bird Friendly Coffee designation requires coffee farms to be certified organic, with a healthy soil base and zero pesticides. The program also requires a variety of native shade trees throughout the coffee plantation.
Bird Friendly coffees are shade-grown, meaning the coffee is planted under a canopy of trees, rather than land that has been cleared of all other vegetation. Bird Friendly coffees are also certified organic, meaning they are grown without the use of chemical pesticides that are harmful to the environment.
✓ The predominating tree species shouldnt make up more than 60% of the total canopy, and shouldnt be an exotic species. ✓ Bird Friendly coffee must be clearly separated from all other coffee (organic or conventional), at all stages of harvest, post harvest, processing and trade.
