Place your subject close to the edge of the shadow. Placing it on the edge of the shadow means that the bright light outside of the shadow area will be more likely to illuminate it without shining directly onto it. This helps to add dimension.
Always look for a location where the sun is behind your source of shade (for example, the sun is shining behind some trees). Put your subjects in front of your source of shade and make sure they are facing toward the open sky with the sun behind them, or behind but slightly out of frame.
If needed, move your subject closer to a wall or tree to increase the shadow on their face. In the image below, on the right side of my son is a high wall which is blocking the sun and creating some shade. On the left side of my son is the wall of my house and its reflecting some sunlight on him.
Simply put, open shade is an area that blocks direct sunlight but is still illuminated from the surrounding light. Learning how to utilize it will allow you to shoot almost anywhere at any time of the day. Add a few other tools and techniques, and open shade can become lighting bliss!
Not sure what light versus dark wedding photography is? Light photos lean toward being more romantic and soft because of the lighter colors and muted tones. Dark wedding images seem more moving and sometimes haunting because of the deep shadows and intense colors.
Shadow Photography Ideas, Tips, and Examples Take Advantage of the Inverse Square Law. Create Silhouettes Add Patterns. Frame Your Subject. Use Hard Light. Experiment with Light Patterns for Portraits. Make It Black and White. Minimize Distractions.
Lets list some reasons you probably dont want to shoot portraits in the sun: The light will be bright, contrasty, and the shadows will be hard and distinct. Your subject will probably squint. On a hot day, your subject will get hot, and cranky and both you and the subject wont have much fun.
