Standard ACLs are typically used at the edge of a network to block unwanted traffic from entering the network. Extended ACLs: An Extended ACL is more flexible than a Standard ACL and allows filtering based on a range of criteria, including source and destination IP addresses, protocols, ports, and other parameters.
Benefits of Using ACLs With an access list, you can simplify the way local users, remote users, and remote hosts are identified. This is done using an authentication database configured to ensure only approved users are allowed access to the device. An access list also allows you to prevent unwanted users and traffic.
Access Control List Examples. The most common examples of Access Control List include web servers, DNS servers, and remote access or VPN systems. The internal router of a DMZ contains stricter ACLs to protect the internal network from more specific attacks.
ACL best practices and recommendations Be as specific as possible when setting up ACLs. Minimize the size of the source and destination traffic in your ACL rules when possible. Do not define the destination as any (your entire Rackspace environment) when only one destination server needs to be accessed.
An access control list (ACL) contains rules that grant or deny access to certain digital environments. There are two types of ACLs: Filesystem ACLs━filter access to files and/or directories. Filesystem ACLs tell operating systems which users can access the system, and what privileges the users are allowed.
At one point, an ACL was the primary method for firewall protection. Today, there are alternatives and additional forms of firewalls. An ACL can be used in conjunction with other security technologies, including virtual private networks (VPNs), which can determine what traffic to encrypt and where to direct it.
