welcome to this final final session of the fundamentals so this is going to serve as a little bit of a bridge between uh some of the theory and fundamentals weve covered and getting into some actual hands-on data processing and analysis so what were going to be looking at is pig bond link so how we can use some of the things weve learned so far to approach actually deconvoluting our spectra and learning things about our sample what kind of different line shapes that weve got available and how do we know what to use and where and so were going to be focusing on some of that for now and also looking at a few dos and donts of data processing and to give you a bit of a basis and a background on how to begin and then this will lead nicely into getting into some actual use of the software as well so as weve seen now time and time again spectra do not just contain clear distinct peaks for each chemical environment weve often got shoulders overlapping peaks and you know mixtures of d

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is used to determine quantitative atomic composition and chemistry. It is a surface analysis technique with a sampling volume that extends from the surface to a depth of approximately 5070 .
Interpretation of XPS spectra. Adventitious carbon contamination is commonly used as a charge reference for XPS spectra. C1s spectrum for contamination typically has C-C, C-O-C, and O-C=O.
The detected depth of XPS is involved many factors including the energy of X-ray, the kinetic energy of core-level electrons, the secondary electron escape depth from materials, and so on. One more way, changer the incident angle of the x-ray also changes the detect depth, as shown in the attached picture.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
The maximum sample size that can be analyzed in most XPS instruments is on the order of 20 cm2 and often on the order of a few cm2. Allowed sample heights are also instrument dependent, but typically are 25 mm.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
Monatomic depth profiling uses an ion beam to etch layers of the surface or surface contamination, revealing subsurface information. Combining a sequence of ion gun etch cycles with XPS analyses provides quantified information as well as layer thicknesses.
Basic principles of XPS Why is this a surface technique? So the excited photoelectrons are relatively slow and mostly interact with the material they are generated and lose energy. A few electrons get out un-scattered and are detected as the photoelectron peaks. (mostly from the upper 10 nm of the material.)
