Remember phone books? I remember phone books. Youd have a name and then youd look that person up and copy down their phone number and then you dial their number into a phone the size of your face. Imagine if e-mail was like that. Youd have someones email address, which is like their name, but then youd still have to look up their domains mail server, which is like their phone number. Finally, youd have to copy everything down and send an email to, well, you get the point. But e-mails not like that. When you send a message, you can just type in any e-mail address and click send, without having to add any weird looking mail servers. So, how does Gmail or any other e-mail service just auto-magically know which mail server to deliver your mail to? The answer iis-- wait for it. [EXPLOSION] An MX record. Your domains MX records consist of a list of mail servers that tell email servers like Gmail where to deliver your incoming mail. Thats pretty much it. Its just like being listed

Using the Domain Registrars DNS You will need to configure the following DNS records: Set the nameservers of example.com to your domain registrars nameservers. Setup the mail.example.com A record to the primary IP of the server with us. Set the MX record of example.com to mail.example.com.
An email address is matched to a domain name (what follows the @), and this needs to be matched to an IP address to be able to send the data. So the mail server uses DNS to match the address on the envelope to its destination, and deliver the email.
This can affect email delivery because its used to verify the authenticity of the senders domain name. Email servers do this by using PTR records to perform a reverse DNS lookup to verify that the corresponding domain name matches the domain name used in the email messages From address.
Go to DNS Settings. For Email Security, click Configure. If your domain sends email, use the available options to set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. If your domain does not send email, use the Your domain is not used to send email section to set up restrictive email records.
How to Find the SMTP Email Server for an Email Address Open a DOS Command Prompt (Start-Programs-Accessories-Command Prompt) Type nslookup. Your computers DNS Server name and IP address will be displayed.
DNS stands for Domain Name System or Domain Name Server. Theyre responsible for connecting domain names to web servers. Anytime you connect to the internet and go anywhere, youre using them.
SMTP. The SMTP is a protocol used to transfer e-mail messages and attachments. SMTP is used to transmit e-mail between e-mail servers and from e-mail clients (such as Microsoft Outlook or UNIX and Linuxs sendmail) to e-mail servers (such as Microsoft Exchange).
Most SMTP servers will accept your mail if you simply have a reverse DNS entry. It does not have to match the domain name on your e-mail address. Some SMTP servers will reject mail if the reverse DNS doesnt match the HELO/EHLO hostname used in the connection.
How to Build Your SPF Record in 5 Simple Steps Step 1: Gather IP addresses used to send email. The first step to implement SPF is to identify which mail servers you use to send email from your domain. Step 2: Make a list of your sending domains. Step 3: Create your SPF record. Step 4: Publish your SPF to DNS. Step 5: Test!
A DNS mail exchange (MX) record directs email to a mail server. The MX record indicates how email messages should be routed in ance with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP, the standard protocol for all email). Like CNAME records, an MX record must always point to another domain.
