To find your preferences in InDesign, go to Preferences > Type. If they are turned off, go to Type > Insert Special Character > Quotation Marks. From there you can choose single or double quotes both as left and right.
1. More appropriately called a quotation mark and alternatively known as a double quote or inverted commas, a quotation mark is a symbol ( " ) on a keyboard. It is located next to the Enter key on a US QWERTY keyboard.
Direct Quotations Example: My sister said, “I need to do my homework.” If the quoted material is a fragment or a phrase, do not capitalize the first letter. Example: The phrase “don‟t win in practice” is consistent for all sports.
Open quotation marks are used at the beginning of each paragraph to indicate to the reader that the character is still speaking. The closing quotation mark is only used at the end of the spoken dialogue.
Direct Quotations Quotation marks always come in pairs. ... Capitalize the first letter of a direct quote when the quoted material is a complete sentence. ... Do not use a capital letter when the quoted material is a fragment or only a piece of the original material's complete sentence.
How to Use Pull Quotes Keep Pull Quotes Brief and to the Point. ... Keep Pull Quotes Visually Short. ... Make Pull Quotes Stand Apart From the Accompanying Text. ... Do Not Place the Pull Quote Too Close to the Text Quoted. ... Be Consistent With the Style Used for Pull Quotes. ... Keep Pull Quotes Away From Competing Design Elements.
WHAT ARE QUOTATION MARKS? Quotation marks, double (“”) or single (''), are generally used for direct quotes, certain titles, and words used in a special manner. Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end.
The use of quotation marks, also called inverted commas, is very slightly complicated by the fact that there are two types: single quotes (` ') and double quotes (" ").
Quotation marks are most often used to mark something that is spoken or, in other words, to designate a direct quote. That is, they display something that's been said, word for word.
In American English, double quotation marks (“ and ”) are typically used to enclose a quotation while single marks (' and ') are typically used to enclose a quote within a quote.
