A certificate of insurance (COI) is a document from an insurer to show you have business insurance. Theyre also known as certificates of liability insurance or proof of insurance. With a COI, your clients can make sure you have the right insurance before they start working with you.
The most common type of coverage purchased for Business Auto is Symbol 7 Symbol 7 coverage refers to any scheduled or listed vehicles on your policy. It is like Personal Auto coverage.
Of the 10 available symbols, symbol 1 affords the broadest coverage. It triggers coverage for any auto used in your business, including autos you (the named insured) own or hire and autos owned by someone else, such as an employee.
However, a declarations page is part of your insurance policy that offers more detailed information, while a COI is a document that provides evidence of insurance.
Symbol 1 is the broadest any auto. Symbol 9 provides coverage for non-owned vehicles only. Using symbol 7 reduces the coverage to claims from vehicles listed on the policy only. Insurers sometimes use combination of symbols 8 and 9, for example, to provide coverage for hired and non-owned autos.
Symbol 1 is any auto. The auto does not have to be declared and when it was purchased makes no difference. With symbol 1, the liability claim is covered. Symbol 1 covers any auto (owned, borrowed, rented, hired) for liability.
Symbol 7: Scheduled Vehicles The most common type of coverage purchased for Business Auto is Symbol 7 Symbol 7 coverage refers to any scheduled or listed vehicles on your policy. It is like Personal Auto coverage.
A common alternative to Symbol 1 on your auto commercial insurance is a combination of Symbols 7, 8 and 9. The benefit of this combination is potentially lower premiums due to coverage extending only to specifically described, hired, and non-owned autos, rather than any auto.
