Evaluation plays an enormous role in the teaching learning process. It helps teachers and learners to improve teaching and learning. Evaluation is a continuous process and a periodic exercise. It helps in forming the values of judgment, educational status, or achievement of student.
Below is a simplified version of our planning, loosely based on the backward design process: Identify goals of the performance-based assessment. Select the appropriate course standards. Review assessments and identify learning gaps. Design the scenario. Gather or create materials. Develop a learning plan.
Evaluating Performance Define the learning objective. Identify the concepts or skills students need to demonstrate. Identify the levels of performance and their point values. Identify the criteria for each level of performance and create table. Create a grading system based on possible points earned.
There are three types of assessment: diagnostic, formative, and summative.
A rubric is based on a set of criteria and includes a description of performance levels ing to a fixed scale (e.g., 4-points). Lets examine three types of rubrics. A holistic rubric provides an overall rating of a students performance, typically yielding a single score.
Content criteria are used to evaluate the degree of a students knowledge and understanding of facts, concepts and principles. Process criteria are used to evaluate the proficiency level of performance of a skill or process, as well as the effectiveness of the methods and procedures used in a task.
Approaches to measuring student learning Summative assessments - tests, quizzes, and other graded course activities that are used to measure student performance. Formative assessment - any means by which students receive input and guiding feedback on their relative performance to help them improve.
Examples of performance assessments include composing a few sentences in an open-ended short response, developing a thorough analysis in an essay, conducting a laboratory investigation, curating a portfolio of student work, and completing an original research paper.
