Protobuf has a hard limit of 2GB, because many implementations use 32-bit signed arithmetic. For security reasons, many implementations (especially the Google-provided ones) impose a size limit of 64MB by default, although you can increase this limit manually if you need to.
The official recommendation is to keep Protobuf messages around 1MB in size.
One of the main advantages of Protobuf is its efficiency. Because it is a binary format, it is smaller and faster than JSON. This makes it ideal for data transfer over networks and storage in files. Protobuf also supports schema evolution, which means that it can handle changes to the data structure over time.
They allow encoding unsigned 64-bit integers using anywhere between one and ten bytes, with small values using fewer bytes. Each byte in the varint has a continuation bit that indicates if the byte that follows it is part of the varint.
The protobuf C++ library has a limit to 2 GB because sizes inside are int (signed 32-bit integers).
There is a default byte size limit of 64MB when parsing protocol buffers - if a message is larger than that, it will fail to parse.
There is a default byte size limit of 64MB when parsing protocol buffers - if a message is larger than that, it will fail to parse. This can be configured if you really need to parse larger messages, but it is generally not recommended.
