Try to divide up your dosing times as evenly as possible throughout the day: for example, every 12 hours for a drug that needs to be taken twice a day, or every 8 hours for a drug that needs to be taken three times a day.
Give at the correct time - If medication is to be given twice daily, give it as close to 12-hour intervals as you can, not at breakfast and tea time. Give for the correct length of time - Even if your pet seems to be better, dont stop before the end of the prescribed course.
Organize inventory. You may have various pet medications in your home. Use labeled resealable bags to organize them into categories. Using a permanent marker, label the bags clearly as eye, ear, antibiotics, arthritis, heartworm, flea/tick, heart, kidney, etc. Put the medication back in the proper bag after giving it.
At the same time, the amount of medicine in your pets blood must also be low enough to prevent it from becoming toxic and dangerous to your pets health. In other words, twice a day means once every 12 hours, and thrice means once every 8 hours.
First up, how do we calculate our drug dosages? Simply, we take the dose (in mg/kg, for example) and multiply this by the body weight (in kg), then divide by the concentration of the drug (mg/ml) to get the total volume required.
Medicine effectiveness comes from how it is consumed. If it is taken incorrectly, it will not be effective. Theoretically, the dosage in the human body needs to be constant, for example, six hours. After six hours, the concentration in the blood goes down; thus, we need to take another dosage.
If your pet misses a dose, its fine to give him or her the medication as soon as you realize its needed, as long as its only been a few hours since the antibiotic should have been taken. If its almost time for the next pill, dont give your pet the missed dose.
