Example of Change of Demand Technological advancements and fashion trends arent the only factors that can trigger a change in demand. For example, during the mad cow disease scare, consumers started buying chicken rather than beef, even though the latters price had not changed.
A demand curve shift refers to fundamental changes in the balance of supply and demand that alter the quantity demanded at the same price. For example, you may be willing to buy 10 apples at $1. If the grocery store drops the price to $0.75, then that demand curve movement means you might buy 15 apples instead of 10.
Holding the number of products and their prices fixed, an increase in market size proportionately increases demand for all products. In equilibrium, this generates additional entry. As the number of consumed varieties rises, the new demand curves also shift in.
Factors that can shift the demand curve for goods and services, causing a different quantity to be demanded at any given price, include changes in tastes, population, income, prices of substitute or complement goods, and expectations about future conditions and prices.
Change in the quantity demanded. For example, if the price of milk drops from $3 a liter to $2 a liter and as a result, the quantity demanded of milk increases from 40 liters to 60 liters, then this is regarded as a change in the quantity demanded because the change in price causes a movement along the demand curve.
For example, in recent years as the price of tablet computers has fallen, the quantity demanded has increased (because of the law of demand). Since people are purchasing tablets, there has been a decrease in demand for laptops, which can be shown graphically as a leftward shift in the demand curve for laptops.
Demand curves can shift. Changes in factors like average income and preferences can cause an entire demand curve to shift right or left. This causes a higher or lower quantity to be demanded at a given price.
