As such, you only have the power to obtain a COI from your agent or broker and submit it. You are not authorized to create or docHub one. You cant even sign it. Your insurance agent should be the only person who supplies your COI.
A COI is a statement of coverage issued by the company that insures your business. Usually no more than one page, a COI provides a summary of your business coverage. It serves as verification that your business is indeed insured. Potential clients may request a COI as a condition of doing business with you.
Insureds dont have the authority to issue their own certificates. The agent, under contract with the carrier, issues a COI on behalf of the insurer.
For the Insured, you will need to provide the full named insured and complete mailing address. In the lower right-hand area, you will need to enter the carrier name for any carriers represented as providing coverage on the certificate. Once that is completed, you will move on to the Coverages section of the form.
How To Get a Certificate of Insurance. If your client requests a COI, you can get one from your insurance company. Some states may also let businesses use an electronic version or insurance ID cards to prove they have insurance. Its a good idea to make sure you know whats acceptable in your state.
COIs contain only the most essential aspects of these contracts with your insurance provider, such as the policyholders name, effective and expiration dates, type of coverage, limits, and carrier.
Call your broker, explain to them what the minimum coverage amount is and that you need proof of insurance. If your policy already meets the requirements, then the broker will contact your carrier to secure the COI.
To get your company added, your contractor will need to communicate to their insurance agent or broker to add an endorsement form. There are plenty of endorsement forms available, and you need to know who is being added, what type of protection you have, and the limit of that protection.
