Atoms present in compound being tested by XPS are determined ing to the equation: Here, binding energy is the energy of an electron attracted to a nucleus; photon energy is the energy of X-ray photons being used by the spectrometer, and the kinetic energy is the energy of the ejected electrons from the sample.
XPS spectra are, for the most part, quantified in terms of peak intensities and peak positions. The peak intensities measure how much of a material is at the surface, while the peak positions indicate the elemental and chemical composition.
The photoelectron kinetic energy (KE) excited by a photon energy (PE) is measured from a reference from the spectrometer workfunction (WF), so the binding energy (BE) is formulated as the following equation; PE = BE + (KE + WF).
All orbital levels except the s levels (l = 0) give rise to a doublet with the two possible states having different binding energies. This is known as spin-orbit splitting (or j-j coupling)[1].

As an example, for 2p spectra, where n is 2 and l is 1, j will be 1/2 and 3/2, the area ratio for the two spin orbit peaks (2p1/2:2p3/2) will be 1:2 (corresponding to 2 electrons in the 2p1/2 level and 4 electrons in the 2p3/2 level).
Most of the binding of the S atom is with the molecule, as reflected in the binding energy of the molecule which is 1.88 eV for hollow and bridge sites, and 1.81 eV for the atop site (as compared to about 4 eV for atomic sulfur on Au(111)).
There is possibility of differentiating the peaks of XPS and the peaks of auger electrons. They both can be distinguished by using two different materials such as magnesium tube and aluminium tube.
This splitting is called fine-structure splitting. It is due to spin-orbit interaction in the excited states of the atoms between the electronic spin and the electronic angular momentum of the single unpaired electron in the highest occupied orbital.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
