Use a formal letter-writing style (do not address the doctor by first name or use a greeting such as Hey). Introduce yourself, note your stage of training, ask directly to shadow that doctor, and describe what you hope to get out of the experience. You can also outline why you are interested in medicine.

How do I find a doctor to shadow? If you have a relationship with your own doctor(s), or know any doctors, start by asking them. You can also ask your teachers, professors, and premed or academic advisors if they know any doctors that other students have shadowed in the past.
Its best to start shadowing before submitting your primary medical school application. Researching potential doctors and docHubing out to them takes time, as does waiting for responses. To give yourself enough time, consider seeking shadowing opportunities during your sophomore year.
Shadowing other practitioners will allow students to gain a broader perspective of the role that different professions play in patient care. The student will observe practitioner interactions with patients and other team members to understand practices for collaboration, teamwork, as well as patient safety.
Even though it may be very tempting to tell someone else who may know that patient about what you saw, you can not share or talk about this information with anyone (other than the person you are shadowing with at the hospital). dealing with patients information you must keep it confidential.
