What Are Contract Manufacturing and Toll Manufacturing? Contract manufacturing and toll manufacturing are ways of doing business for many companies, large and small. What are they exactly and how do they differ? There are many paths to manufacturing success. Some companies start from scratch and produce their products in-house from day one. Others produce some aspects of their goods while buying partially processed materials or sub-assemblies from others. And there are some who manufacture their entire product lines using another companys facilities either as a transition to in-house production or as an element of their core business model. In the case of the latter, those who manufacture their products through other entities are doing so using contract manufacturing. In contract manufacturing, a company will initiate a contract between themselves and a manufacturer to produce a certain number of products for the parent company for a period. Tolling Fee means the fee charged by Supplier to Buyer on a per pound basis for each SKU of the Products which shall include, among other things, labor, costs, utilities and fixed overhead (including real property leasing obligations, if any).
Tolling cost are fixed costs per unit that are added to the processing overhead of an intermediate product. These costs will be apparent within formulas and batches.
Toll blending may involve the customer providing all or some percentage of product materials. Conversely, turnkey contract manufacturing allows the business to rely on the manufacturer to source the product materials. The pros and cons of toll manufacturing vs. contract manufacturing will differ from client to client.
Your manufacturing contract should include: intellectual property (since the contract manufacturer(s) will be producing your proprietary creation). an assessment of manufacturing costs. clearly-written obligations of both parties. liabilities. product quality standards (if a quality control clause is included).
Toll manufacturing is an outsourcing arrangement in which you supply the raw materials and pay a fee (or toll) to access the subcontractors manufacturing capabilities. In this case, the subcontracting company is also called the tolling company or toll manufacturer.
In toll manufacturing, the customer owns the materials and the products, while in other types of contract manufacturing, the manufacturer owns them or shares them with the customer. This means that the customer bears the risk of material loss, damage, or spoilage, as well as the market fluctuations and demand changes.
Toll manufacturing is highly prevalent in the consumer electronics industry. A textbook example of such an arrangement is Apple and Foxconn. Apple has very limited manufacturing capabilities, and almost all of its products are, in fact, manufactured by Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant.
The manufacturer receives a fee or toll, a flat fee agreed upon before commencement of processing. They are only responsible for the final products quality as far as the processing is concerned. The source company is responsible for the quality of materials and the vendors.
