Sampling is a technique that involves selecting a subset of units or data from a larger population and analyzing them to draw inferences about the whole. Sampling can be used to monitor process performance in various contexts, such as quality control, improvement, and optimization.
Common data logger sample rates are 1 S/s up to 100 S/s per channel. This is quite slow compared to modern digital DAQ systems. Low sample rates are the reason they can record for such long periods of time.
The sampling frequency or sampling rate, fs, is the average number of samples obtained in one second, thus fs = 1/T, with the unit samples per second, sometimes referred to as hertz, for example e.g. 48 kHz is 48,000 samples per second.
Data Sampling / aka Data Logging is the act of logging data from a device. The logged data is often shown in a Trend display. Trending is the act of taking data and showing it visually, usually via a graph. The relationship between Data Sampling and Trending is intertwined.
Usually the logging rate or sample rate as its sometimes referred to is expressed in hertz using the abbreviation, capital Hz. A logging rate of 10 Hz means that the datalogger is collecting 10 samples every second or in other words one sample every 0.1 seconds.
The sample rate depends on the specific model. Although most data loggers have a maximum data rate of 1 or 2 samples per second, OMEGA offers a number of data loggers that can sample in excess of 100 samples per second.
A sample log is a record of all the events a sample experiences.
