For those of you listening to this, youve just missed 10 minutes of me speaking at the start. Um, so basically weve identified all of the peaks. Now each of these peaks, the the relative intensity of them, uh corresponds to the number of atoms which are present in the surface. So each peak is proportional to the number of atoms of carbon, the number of atoms of oxygen. And So what we want to do, of course we want to use those peaks to quantify. The carbon to quantify the oxygen. But what youll notice is where we have we have these peaks, but we also have the this. A docHub background which forms after each peak. So the right hand side have quite a flat low background, but after each peak we have this relatively docHub background that increases in intensity after each peak. And that background is formed by, for example, carbon 1S electrons being inelastically scattered. On the way out of the surface or 01 S electrons being inelastically scattered all the way out of the sur

The variation of binding energy results in the shift of the corresponding XPS peak, ranging from 0.1eV to 10eV. This effect is termed as chemical shift, which can be applied to studying the chemical status of element in the surface. Therefore, XPS is also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA).
When quantifying XPS spectra, Relative Sensitivity Factors (RSF) are used to scale the measured peak areas so that variations in the peak areas are representative of the amount of material in the sample surface. An element library typically contains lists of RSFs for XPS transitions.
Because of the relatively low kinetic energy of the Auger electrons they can only escape from the uppermost few monolayers of a specimen surface. This is the reason why this technique is such surface sensitive.
XPS is a surface sensitive technique because only those electrons generated near the surface escape and are detected. The photoelectrons of interest have relatively low kinetic energy.
XPS can detect all elements except hydrogen and helium, with detection limits of ca. 0.1 atomic percent. This makes it an ideal analysis for both conductive and insulating samples including ceramics, glasses, polymers, semiconductors, metals, composite materials, and strongly adsorbed liquids or gases on surfaces.
The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus. i.e. peaks from electrons in 1s will have a greater energy than peaks representing electrons from 2s.
By contrast, a surface sensitive technique is more sensitive to those atoms which are located near the surface than it is to atoms in the bulk which are well away from the surface (i.e. the main part of the signal comes from the surface region) - in the case of the first sample therefore a surface sensitive technique
X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) also known as Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) is the most widely used surface analysis technique because it can be applied to a broad range of materials and provides valuable quantitative and chemical state information from the surface of the material being
