If you expect to owe at least $1,000 in taxes, after all deductions and credits, AND your withholding and credits are expected to be less than the calculated number—in this example $500—then you should file 1040-ES.
The answer is no. Because the U.S. tax system is pay as you go, you need to pay and file on a quarterly basis or you'll be charged a penalty.
Quarterly Estimated Taxes Due: You are required to pay 100 percent of the total of your prior year's taxes or 90 percent of your estimated current year's taxes. If you make over $150,000 in self-employment income, you must pay 110 percent of last year's taxes.
The general rule is to divide your total estimated tax by four and make four equal payments on each due date. But you can adjust the payments to account for bumps or drops during the year that indicate your original income prediction is off.
Use Form 1040-ES to figure and pay your estimated tax for 2023. Estimated tax is the method used to pay tax on income that isn't subject to withholding (for example, earnings from self-employment, interest, dividends, rents, alimony, etc.).
You must make estimated tax payments and file Form 1040-ES if both of these apply: Your estimated tax due is $1,000 or more.
If you forget to pay your quarterly estimated tax, the IRS will proceed to throw interest and penalty charges your way. If you forget, it doesn't mean they will forget as well. In the beginning, the IRS will probably dock a tax or somewhere around 5% of what you owe.
Go to IRS.gov/account. Visit IRS.gov/payments to view all the options. For additional information, refer to Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax. Using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is the easiest way for individuals as well as businesses to pay federal taxes.
To figure out if you should file 1040-ES for the current year make the following calculation: Take the tax you paid in the previous year. Calculate 90 percent of the tax you estimate you will owe in the current year. Compare the two, and take the smaller number.
For estimated tax purposes, a year has four payment periods. Taxpayers must make a payment each quarter. For most people, the due date for the first quarterly payment is April 15. The next payments are due June 15 and Sept.
