What is book positioning? Simply stated, book positioning is the place your book occupies in the mind of your reader, and how that reader perceives your book as fulfilling their needs. That is the technical, industry definition of positioning.
Before you print and send off your book proposal, youll want to make sure its formatted properly. Proposals are most commonly formatted in Microsoft Word or PDF. We recommend 1.5 spacing throughout the proposal, with the exception of the cover letter (single-spaced) and the sample chapters (double spaced).
One way to start writing your hook is to jot down some sentences about the main plot or topic of your book and the main characters (fiction) or people and ideas (nonfiction). Search for a few strong words that capture the theme and conflict in your story or message and build from there.
The average book proposal itself will be between 15 and 30 pages. But book proposal length also includes those sample chapters, and this is where individual projects can land all over the map. If your book proposal is shorter than ten pages without sample material, however, its probably too short.
They want to see if your story premise might have mainstream media potential or the ability to land major interviews that will lead to sales. If you have little or no platform, and your story is lyrical, quiet, or literary, then you should try to target agents and publishers who dont require a proposal.
Heres the general structure of a proposal: As you can see, a proposal generally consists of: Introduction: A brief overview of the problem, solution, costs, and benefits. Issue: The main definition of the issue, including subject, purpose, main argument, background information and importance.
How To Write A Hook Startle The Reader With Your First Line. Start With Action. Form An Emotional Connection. Begin At A Life-Changing Moment. Create Intrigue About The Characters. Start At A Moment Of Confusion. Draw In The Reader With A Strong Voice. Introduce Something Ominous.
What a book proposal should contain 1) Header. 2) A brief synopsis of the book. 3) Longer synopsis of the book, if you feel it is necessary. 4) Chapter breakdown. 5) Sample chapter (some editors will not require this) 6) Book details. 7) About the author/biography. 8) Platform/audience.
Key Elements of a Complete Proposal. Cover. Table of Contents. Abstract (also called Project Summary) Project Description (also called Narrative or Research Plan) Budget Explanation (also called Budget Justification) Vita (also called Resume or Biographical Sketch) Other Support (also called Current and Pending Support)
Steps to writing your own project proposal Step 1: Define the problem. Step 2: Present your solution. Step 3: Define your deliverables and success criteria. Step 4: State your plan or approach. Step 5: Outline your project schedule and budget. Step 6: Tie it all together. Step 7: Edit/proofread your proposal.
