A Pap smear should not hurt but may feel uncomfortable. You could experience light bleeding afterward, but you should not feel pain or cramping. Let your healthcare provider know if you feel discomfort lasting more than a few minutes or if the bleeding lasts longer than 24 hours.
Pap Smear (Cytology) Results Classification Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. Atypical glandular cells (AGC).
The provider will gently insert a tool called a speculum into your vagina. It looks similar to a duck bill and is used to spread the vagina slightly so the provider can collect a sample of cells from your cervix with a small soft brush. The Pap test usually lasts only a few minutes. You can expect mild sensations.
Mild inflammation was defined as less than 30 inflammatory cells/high-power field; moderate inflammation was defined as 30 to 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field; and severe inflammation was defined as more than 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field.
Pap Smear Procedure You'll spread your legs, and your doctor will insert a metal or plastic tool (speculum) into your vagina. They'll open it so that it widens the vaginal walls. This allows them to see your cervix. Your doctor will use a swab to take a sample of cells from your cervix.
Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix, the lower, narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Possible symptoms of cervicitis include bleeding between menstrual periods, pain with intercourse or during a pelvic exam, and abnormal vaginal discharge.
Pap test. In a Pap test, your doctor uses a vaginal speculum to hold your vaginal walls apart and to see the cervix. Next, a sample of cells from your cervix is collected using a small cone-shaped brush and a tiny plastic spatula (1 and 2).
Inflammation on a Pap smear can be found in a patient of any age and may be attributable to a benign infection—such as Candida vaginitis—that need be treated only if the patient is symptomatic. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause an inflammatory reaction on the cervix and should be treated ingly.
3. Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (previously Class III, mild dysplasia): This classification is for abnormal cells, which may be considered as mild dysplasia or with mild “premalignant” potential. This same category would be used if there is any sign of the human papilloma (wart) virus.
Cervical inflammation; Inflammation - cervix. Cervicitis is swelling or inflamed tissue of the end of the uterus (cervix). Cervicitis is the inflammation of the cervix. It is usually caused by an infection but may also be caused by chemical exposure or the presence of a foreign body.
