Leasing a cell phone can be a good idea if you like to upgrade to a new phone every year (or thereabouts) and dont necessarily need to own your phone. Leasing a phone can be cheaper than paying off a phone in full (whether outright or via monthly installments) and youll be able to get a new phone every 12-18 months.
If you can be content using the same phone for two years or longer, your better off just buying your phones outright. Overtime, lease payments could add up to far more than you would pay for the phone upfront assuming you dont trade your phone in every year or two.
WHAT happens if you do not return a leased phone? You have to return it. The phone will be canceled out. The number will be frozen.
The phone you were leasing must be returned in good working condition and undamaged. Own it, either by paying the purchase option price in one payment (contacting the online chat agent may be required for this) or in nine monthly installment payments. Upgrade AND own: upgrade to a new phone with your phone number.
Your provider can remotely restrict access to your device if you dont make payments. If your device is restricted, basic functionality, such as emergency calling and access to settings, will still be available.
If you break the lease, you immediately have to pay the remaining amount owed. You just cant pick up and move and think you dont own a thing because you dont live there anymore. And if you are unwilling to pay the remaining amount owed, you can be sued for that amount plus court fees if you lose.
Credit card companies, mortgage lenders, auto lenders and more all report your payments to credit bureaus, building this record over time. Unlike your mortgage or car payments, paying your cell phone bill regularly each month alone will not help increase your credit score.
What Happens If You Dont Return a Leased Phone? This depends on where you are with payments. Some carriers let you continue paying the fee to lease the phone. However, if youre late with your payments and have yet to give back the phone once your lease has expired, this information may end up on your credit report.
After your lease ends, a charge will appear on your bill for the remaining purchase-option price of your device, plus taxes.
Leasing company owns the phone On the other hand, when you purchase a smartphone, its yours. That means that you can decide what to do with it, including whether to keep it or sell it to someone else. You dont have that option with leasing, unless you decide to buy the phone later.
