When you quote directly from a source, enclose the quoted section in quotation marks. Add an in-text citation at the end of the quote with the author name and page number, like this: "Here's a direct quote" (Smith 8). "Here's a direct quote" ("Trouble" 22).
A note, indicated by a superscript number placed directly after the quote, specifies the author, title, and page number—or sometimes fuller information. Unlike with parenthetical citations, in this style, the period or other punctuation mark should appear within the quotation marks, followed by the footnote number.
Quoted text is placed inside double quotation marks. The citation appears in parentheses outside the quotation and includes the author, date and page number (p.
When to include page numbers. You should include the page number in the in-text citation when directly quoting the exact wording of a source. Short direct quotes are enclosed within quotation marks. Note: in-text citations go after the full stop.
To do the summary, rephrase the quotation in your own words. You can begin this sentence by using a phrase such as “In other words…” or “This refers to…” Example: In other words, communism throws out all beliefs, not only ones that counter communism. Analyzing a quotation is much different from summarizing a quotation.
The author's name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your sentence.
Place a parenthetical citation either immediately after the quotation or at the end of the sentence. For a narrative citation, include the author and year in the sentence and then place the page number or other location information in parentheses after the quotation.
Direct Quotation of Material With Page Numbers For a single page, use the abbreviation “p.” (e.g., p. 25, p. S41, p. e221). For multiple pages, use the abbreviation “pp.” and separate the page range with an en dash (e.g., pp. 34–36). If pages are discontinuous, use a comma between the page numbers (e.g., pp. 67, 72).
In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a page number enclosed in parentheses. "Here's a direct quote" (Smith 8). If the author's name is not given, then use the first word or words of the title.
Write a sentence in which you make the point you want to support or illustrate with the quotation. End the sentence with a colon to introduce your sentence. ing to can be followed by the name of a publication or a person. Put a comma after the name of the person or publication that introduces the quote.
