A patent number is an identifier assigned by a patent office and is used often in a patent search. The format depends on the issuing office, the type of patent, and when the patent was issued. Patent numbers may contain a combination of several pieces of information: The year the patent was issued.
Patent applications filed with the USPTO are given a serial or application number in the format of XX/YYY,YYY. The first two digits before the slash (the “XX”) are the series code and the six digits after the slash (the “YYY,YYY”) are the serial or application number.

For a utility patent, a patent number typically will be in the millions (e.g. 6,434,333). For a design patent, a patent number typically will be in the hundreds of thousands and will start with the letter “D” or the letters “Des.” (e.g. D339,332 or Des. 339,332).
Also, the drawing must include application number, Inventor's name, Invention's name, and identification. Size of the drawing must be 11inch by 8.5 inches and must be white in color. It must be flexible, plane, non-shiny and free of overwriting, alterations and marks of erasing.
You have to first know what the patent number is which is typically conspicuously placed on a commercial product or its packaging. For a utility patent, a patent number typically will be in the millions (e.g. 6,434,333).
Patent numbers are formatted as follows: Utility: Patent numbers consist of six or seven digits. Enter the Patent Number excluding commas and spaces and omit leading zeroes. Reissue: (e.g., Rennnnnn, RE000126) must enter leading zeroes between "RE" and number to create 6 digits.
Yes, there is a difference. When a patent application is filed, the Patent Office assigns an application number. This is sometimes referred to as a Serial Number. Once a patent application issues into a patent, a full patent number is assigned.
For example, U.S. Patent No. 7,654,321 will be represented on the face of the patent as “US 7,654,321 B1” ing to the above scheme. Similarly, U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2003/1234567 will be represented by the number “US 2003/1234567 A1″ on the face of the publication.
Reference numbers are used by employing a set of numbers to distinguish each element described in the detailed description section of the specification and the drawings, i.e. for each element one specific and different number is chosen and the same number is used to label that element in the associated drawings.
