An additional insured is somebody who benefits from the coverage of anothers policy; this includes the ability to make claims under the policy. A certificate holder can request to be an additional insured on the policyholders policy and this would be shown in the COI.
To add a certificate holder to insurance, you must contact your agent and request that they add a new holder. Ask your agent about how to add a certificate holder to insurance when you first start your policy so you understand the process for when you have the first certificate holder you want to add.
COIs contain only the most essential aspects of these contracts with your insurance provider, such as the policyholders name, effective and expiration dates, type of coverage, limits, and carrier.
A certificate holder is someone that takes receipt or evidence of the COI. The certificate holder is the party to which the certificate of insurance is provided to. So if youre hiring someone, and you requested the COI, then youre the certificate holder.
To get your company added, your contractor will need to communicate to their insurance agent or broker to add an endorsement form. There are plenty of endorsement forms available, and you need to know who is being added, what type of protection you have, and the limit of that protection.
A named insured is the person, people, or business(es) that own and are covered by an insurance policy. You could also refer to them as policyholders or a primary insured.
For example, one field is labeled certificate holder. The certificate holder is the party the certificate of insurance is provided to. So if youre hiring someone, and you requested the COI, then youre the certificate holder.
On COIs, additional insured entities are indicated in these two ways: By an X or checkmark in the ADDL INSR box on the General Liability section of the COI, and/or the additional insured entity is named in the DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS section.
