You can request that the information be corrected, but you must do this within 60 days of getting the results. Its best to notify the employer straightaway and provide evidence to prove the information is wrong, then, together, you can move forward to get the background check results corrected.
If youre disputing a criminal error, you should contact your states Bureau of Identification and file a challenge to the criminal record. If a mistake appears on your background check, it could potentially cost you the job youre currently applying for, since it can take weeks for a mistake to be fixed.
The standard practice for background check companies, when aliases are not used, is to search the individuals provided or current name. However, if a candidate provides a nickname or a name that was recently changed (for example, a married name), its possible that no records associated with an alias will be returned.
Additional names will frequently be linked to a SSN in the Trace. The most common reasons for this are: 1) Typographical errors; 2) Jointly filed public records which list both the subject and the second name; 3) Father and son who have the same name; and 4) Fraudulent use of a social security number.
How can a name you dont recognize be attached to your records? Dont panic just yet, as theres a good chance that its a mistake on someone elses part. Its common practice for credit bureaus or other records services to mistype Social Security numbers, wrongly associating unrelated records with your info.
Mixed files are one of the most common causes of incorrect criminal history on a background check. All it takes is having a name that is similar to another individual and a background check company not doing their due diligence to verify that the information is correct.
If theres a small error on your resume, it may be best to do nothing. A small typo may not sway the hiring managers opinion of you or your resume. Recruiters or hiring managers look over many resumes a day, so they might skim over each resume to get through their queue efficiently.
Criminal records are permanent, closely tied to your identity through your Social Security Number, ensuring that background checks will uncover your history regardless of any name changes.
