23 -- A company that employed the inventor of the lucrative blue light-emitting diode (LED) is the rightful owner of its patent, a Tokyo court decided last week. The Associated Press (AP) reported Thursday that Shuji Nakamura, now a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, sued Nichia Corp.
Nick Holonyak, Jr. Nick Holonyak invented the first visible light-emitting diodes (LEDs), today commonly found in applications ranging from traffic lights to consumer electronics. Holonyaks research in optoelectronics revolutionized the lighting, communications, and entertainment industries.
On August 8, 1962, Biard and Pittman filed a patent titled Semiconductor Radiant Diode based on their findings, which described a zinc-diffused pn junction LED with a spaced cathode contact to allow for efficient emission of infrared light under forward bias.
Nick Holonyak (1928) While working for General Electric, the North American engineer invented the first LED in the visible spectrum in 1962. One year later, he stated in Readers Digest that LED lamps would substitute the incandescent bulbs invented by Thomas Edison.
The first low-powered LEDs were developed in the early 1960s, and only produced light in the low, red frequencies of the spectrum. In 1968, the first commercial LED lamps were introduced: Hewlett-Packards LED display, which was developed under Howard C.
To identify a single patent, you can simply mark the product and/or packaging with PATENT [number] or PAT. [number].
