- When it comes to landing a first round interview, your resume might be more important than a cover letter in all ways but one. A good cover letter evokes emotion in the reader. Something even the best resume cannot do. Three-point lighting setup for interviews What exactly is a three-point lighting setup? This setup contains three lights: a key light, a fill light, and a back light. Repeat after me: Key, Fill, Back, and commit it to your video production memory. Lets say were shooting an interview with a single person.
Your basic interview light setup starts with a key light. The key light is your main light source that highlights the dimensions of your subject. You also place this light close to your subject at a 30-degree angle. Then, depending on your desired effect, you can soften this light with a diffuser.
The most popular and basic interview light setup is three-point lighting. This setup is when you light your subject from three angles: key, fill and backlight. Using this setup, you can ensure that your subject stands out against any background.
Thats why great studio lighting is so important, especially so for a corporate video interview. You need your subject to look genuine, relatable, and trustworthy. If your lighting is weird, shadowy, or even spooky, thats not the effect youre going to create!
3-Point Lighting Position the key light first, either 45-degrees to the right or left of the camera and slightly angled down onto the subject. Next, set up the fill light on the opposite side of the key light. The fill lights purpose is to soften some or all of the dramatic shadows produced by the key light.
Lights can be studio lights, or a combination of studio lights and natural light. Start with your main light, your key light, and position it 30 to 45 degrees to the right or left the interviewee. Also consider the vertical height of the key light, and position it roughly 30 to 45 degrees above the subject.
But there is one way of lighting an interview which works on many levels. Three-point lighting is the setup I looked for as a camera operator. It ticks all of the boxes that we needed on set. It exposes the subject correctly, adds depth to the image and creates interest through texturing and sculpting on the subject.
