Exhaust gases normally discharges at a temperature of around 420C (788F). Many incidents have been recorded where the exhaust of a diesel engine has ignited vapors from a leak. Several methods are used to prevent the hazards of exhaust gases acting as an ignition source.
At rich air-fuel ratio, the exhaust gas temperature either increases or decreases depending on the fuel. High temperatures (typically above 1,600 F or 900 C) can be an indicator of dangerous conditions that can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
Surprisingly EGTs can peak at 600C or higher on high powered Diesels.
For towing, wed say 1,200 degrees is a safe number, with occasional spikes of up to 1,400 degrees when climbing grades being an acceptable risk. The concept of EGT is analogous to putting something in the oven.
EGT is affected by mixture. Peak EGT occurs at approximately the stoichiometric (chemically correct) mixture of 14.7 pounds of air for each pound of fuel, at which there is exactly the right amount of oxygen to oxidize all the hydrocarbon chains in the fuel.
Diesel engine exhaust gases vary with speed and load. High loads and high speeds result in the highest temperatures. Generally, temperatures of 500700C (9321293F) are produced in the exhaust gases from diesel-cycle engines at 100% load to 200300C (392572F) with no load.
How Hot Is Too Hot? Based on our own experience in the sled pulling and drag racing world, we can definitely say that any engine running at 1,800 to 2,000 degrees EGT for more than a second or two should be rebuilt every season and may incur turbocharger, cylinder head, or piston damage during the season.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
As diesel engines run hotter, their efficiency decreases because more fuel is needed to produce power. High EGT readings can be caused by a number of problems, including over-fueling, overheating, or blocked air intake filters or ducting.
What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good! Certain parts of your engine can fail due to the excessive heat produced. This can affect your turbocharger, cylinder head, head gasket, exhaust manifold, and pistons.
