Hey there. Hows it going everybody in this video? Were going to be looking at how to read parse and write CSV files now if you dont know what CSV files are it stands for comma separated values basically CSV files allow us to put into a plain text file Some data and use some type of delimiter usually a comma to separate the different fields now I have a sample CSV file here that we can work with and if we look at this then we can see how these are Usually structured so this can kind of look like a mess, but its not really meant to be read directly This is just how the data is stored And then we can use our programs to parse out the information that we want, but we can see that the top Line here has our fields now our fields in this file are first name Last name and email so that tells us the information that we should expect to see on every line so if I go to the next line here then we can see that John is the first name and then a comma though is the last name and then a comma and

Change the CSV file to a TXT file: Replace the CSV extension with TXT. In Excel, go to File Open. Change File of Type to All. Go through the three-step wizard and, in step three, select the column of data and import it as a text field. Excel no longer strips the leading zeroes.
Steps to retain initial 0 when importing a CSV: Once you open the CSV file, right-click the column letter and select Format Cells. Then choose Custom, and set the format to 00000000. This will add the leading 0 to all cells from which it is missing. Now you can use the CSV file to import your record.
This is a limitation in Microsoft Excel. Excel opens CSV files automatically and, if a field contains all numbers, imports that field as a number. Because leading zeroes are unnecessary for a true number, Excel strips them off.
Simply highlight the column(s) and go to Number Format to select text from the drop-down list. This will indicate that the data in that column should be saved as plain text. When you export data in a CSV file, this data will be stored with all of the required leading zeros.
You can keep the leading zeros in CSV files by using Excels Text Import Wizard.
Set the Text qualifier as either double or single quotes. Set the Column delimiter as a comma. Click OK. Click Save -- DO NOT OPEN THE CSV FILE DIRECTLY WITH EXCEL!
A CSV file is a list of data separated by commas. For instance, it may look like the following: Name, email, phone number, address. Example,example@example.com,555-555-5555,Example Address.
How to open import text file in excel without losing leading Click the From Text icon. Select the CSV file with the mouse. Select Tab Delimiters. Select the column that contains the data with leading zeros. Click the Finish button. Click the OK button in the Input Data dialog box.
