hi im matt with copy tech and today well be going over the setup and different modes of the egt plus first well turn on the power next we will hold down the power button to access the menu here we have the ability to set the number of cylinders anywhere from 1 to 16 hitting the power button will toggle you to the next option which is the redline and finally hitting the power button again will take us to our mode selection the egt plus has three different modes continuous record switch and transbrake continuous is the default and is always recording and monitoring the maximum value record switch mode will only record the maximum value when the record switch is on finally we have the transbrake mode which is the most advanced mode we offer on the e GT plus when in this mode it will give you your starting line temperature and rpm your finish line temperature and rpm your maximum temperature and how many seconds into the run it happened as well as any special note time so after setting

What do EGTs tell you?

EGT is an indication of how hot the combustion process is in the cylinders, and the amount of afterburning that is occurring in the exhaust manifold. EGT is also directly related to the air/fuel ratio. The richer the air/fuel ratio in a diesel, the higher the EGT will be.

What temp is too high for EGT?

How Hot Is Too Hot for EGTs? Based on our own experience in the sled pulling and drag racing world, we can definitely say that any engine running at 1,800 to 2,000 degrees EGT for more than a second or two should be rebuilt every season and may incur turbocharger, cylinder head, or piston damage during the season.

Where do you put an EGT?

EGT Probe Installation Methods The probe should be installed in the exhaust manifold closest to the exhaust outlet at the head (this is the closest physical location to the exhaust valve). EGT probe placement close to the exhaust valve isnt always easy.

What should EGT be at?

If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.

How high should my EGT be?

For towing, wed say 1,200 degrees is a safe number, with occasional spikes of up to 1,400 degrees when climbing grades being an acceptable risk. The concept of EGT is analogous to putting something in the oven. You can put your hand in a hot oven for a second or two, and nothing will happen.

Why is EGT important? Because if your in-cylinder temperatures get too hot, you can melt pistons, crack heads, destroy turbos, and create general havoc within your engine. A diesel needs a certain amount of heat to run, but high EGT should definitely be avoided.
