Indexes and Scales An index really just means that it is a measurement that is constructed by summing up other, simpler, measurements. A scale is an index that in some sense only measures one thing. For example, a final exam in a given course could be thought of as a scale: it measures competence in a single subject.
As mentioned, the Dow Jones, SP 500, and Nasdaq Composite are three popular U.S. indexes. These three indexes include the 30 largest stocks in the U.S. by market cap, the 500 largest stocks, and all of the stocks on the Nasdaq exchange, respectively.
Primary Selection of Evaluation Index Competitive ability includes five elements: physical fitness, skill, tactical ability, mental ability, and intelligence.
Index (indices) in Maths is the power or exponent which is raised to a number or a variable. For example, in number 24, 4 is the index of 2. The plural form of index is indices.
Evaluation of an indexing system essentially means measuring the performance of the system, success or failure, in terms of its retrieval efficiency (ease of approach, speed, and accuracy) to the users, and its internal operating efficiency, cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit to the managers of the system.

An index for a questionnaire construct can be defined as a type of composite measure that summarizes and rank-orders several observations and represents some more general dimension (Babbie 2008, 171).
How is the index calculated? The index is calculated by dividing the column % of the crossover cell by the column % of the total cell for the relevant datapoint, and then multiplying by 100. Returning to the example above, we can calculate the index like so: (12.7/9.5)*100=133.7.
An index is constructed simply by accumulating the scores assigned to individual items. For example, we might measure religiosity by adding up the number of religious events the respondent engages in during an average month.
There are four steps for constructing an index: 1) selecting the possible items that represent the variable of interest, 2) examining the empirical relationship between the selected items, 3) providing scores to individual items that are then combined to represent the index, and 4) validating the index.
