4. Click the name of your external hard drive on the list, and then click the - button at the bottom of the window. This allows your Mac to index the contents of the hard drive, which should now appear when you perform searches. If the external hard drive was not on the Privacy list, skip this step.
How to Format an External Hard Drive for Mac Connect an external hard drive to your Mac. Go to Spotlight Search, type in Disk Utility, and click the first option. Then click View in the top-left corner of the window and select Show All Devices. Click the external hard drive you want to format.
Spotlight can help you quickly find apps, documents, emails, and other items on your Mac.On your Mac, do one of the following: Click the Spotlight icon (if shown) in the menu bar. Press Command-Space bar. Press (if available) in the row of function keys on the keyboard.
Open the Finder. Click on Finder in the menu at the top of your screen. Choose Preferences General and make sure that there is a tick beside External Drives.
Open System Preferences. Open Spotlight and select the Privacy tab. Drag the Macintosh HD drive (startup disk) to the Spotlight window and click OK when prompted. Spotlight will start reindexing the drive. Depending on the drive size it might take a while.

Spotlight is indexing your files so that when you use it, it will be able to retrieve the data that you are searching for. This is normal after you have installed a new OS.
Therefore, some of the common causes that may render MacBook not recognizing external hard drive are: The external drive isnt properly connected for data transfer and power supply. The drive is connected to Mac with a faulty cable. Your Mac isnt set to display external drives on the Finder and desktop.
If your Mac slows down randomly, it could be trying to index too many files. The built-in Spotlight tool allows you to search for any apps, files, and folders on your Mac. But since it scans all the files in your external hard drives, Time Machine backups, and more, Spotlight can slow your Mac down.
