A good example of imagery can be found when Steinbeck is describing Curley's wife when she enters the bunk house. He writes, "She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her fingernails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages.
Steinbeck uses imagery to help take the reader on a journey and highlight important ideas with the characters, setting, and plot.
Of Mice and Men is a novella written by John Steinbeck. Published in 1937, it narrates the experiences of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to place in California in search of new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States.
Character Analysis Lennie Small He lumbers like a bear and has the strength of a bear, but his actions are often described like those of a dog.
Steinbeck uses imagery to help take the reader on a journey and highlight important ideas with the characters, setting, and plot.
Steinbeck compares Lennie to a bear, a potentially very dangerous animal. Lennie drags his feet the way a bear drags his paws . The only way he can cope is to be a like a tame dog, tethered always to his master George and never let out of his master's sight.
The story's setting is in California in the 1930s. small, intelligent, short-tempered but a loving and devoted friend, complains that taking care of Lennie makes his life much harder, terse and impatient at times, but he never strays from his primary purpose of protecting Lennie.
John Steinbeck uses symbolic imagery through the setting of the river, the bunkhouse, tactile imagery, and animal imagery in George and Lennie's story. Throughout the novella, one of the main characters, Lennie, is described through animalistic imagery.
Why is it used? Lennie's mental disability makes him unable to understand situations, the way that others behave and what they say. His size and lack of intelligence are often emphasised through the comparisons made between him and animals.
Throughout the novella, one of the main characters, Lennie, is described through animalistic imagery. He is compared to many different animals because of his size, actions, and way of thinking. The animal imagery shows his actions are more instinctual than reasoned.
