when we add an item to firebase cloud fire store it assigns it a unique ID in this video were going to see how to retrieve that unique ID and store it into our objects when we get an update from firebase cloud fire store so what weve done so far in previous videos weve created our firebase instance we have enabled the Save button so that when we add a specimen it will save to firebase cloud fire store and then we added a listener so that when the data changes on firebase cloud fire store it will inform our application and our application will get those updates so that weve already covered in some previous videos were simply going to append our app now to take advantage of this generated ID reason being were putting all of our data into a spinner here and eventually what we want to do is we want to be able to select an item on the spinner have the existing data populate into the screen and then we want to be able to modify that data and hit save and instead of creating a new obje

Firestore Update Entire Document getDatabase() → where we want to update a document. doc() → where we'll be passing references of database, collection and ID of a document that we want to update. setDoc() → where we actually pass new data that we want to replace along with the doc() method.
Reading data from Firestore There are two ways for retrieving data, which is stored in Cloud Firestore. Calling a method to get the data. Setting a listener for receiving data changes events. We send an initial snapshot of the data, and then another snapshot is sent when the document changes.
Step by Step Implementation. For creating a new Activity navigate to the app > res > layout > Right-Click on it and click on New > then click on Empty Activity to create a new Activity and we will name it as UpdateCourse. After creating a new Activity navigate to the app > res > layout > activity_update_course.
Add data Click Add collection, then enter your collection name and click Next. Enter a specific document ID or click Auto ID, then add fields for the data in your document. Click Save. Your new collection and document appear in the data viewer. To add more documents to the collection, click Add document.
Step by Step Implementation. For creating a new Activity navigate to the app > res > layout > Right-Click on it and click on New > then click on Empty Activity to create a new Activity and we will name it as UpdateCourse. After creating a new Activity navigate to the app > res > layout > activity_update_course.
When it comes to the official documentation regarding how to update elements in an array in Firestore, it says that: If your document contains an array field, you can use arrayUnion() and arrayRemove() to add and remove elements. arrayUnion() adds elements to an array but only elements not already present.
There is no API to change the ID of an existing document, nor is there an API to move a document. If you want to store the same contents in a different document, you will have to: Read the document from its existing key. Write the document under its new key.
You cannot have several documents with the same ID in one Collection: a document ID must be unique across a collection.
Set the data of a document within a collection, explicitly specifying a document identifier. Add a new document to a collection. In this case, Cloud Firestore automatically generates the document identifier. Create an empty document with an automatically generated identifier, and assign data to it later.
The names of documents within a collection are unique. You can provide your own keys, such as user IDs, or you can let Cloud Firestore create random IDs for you automatically.
