Years ago when I first got into digital raw photography, my photo editing process was.. well, pretty much non-existent. I would open a raw image in Lightroom, I would scroll through the Develop panel, and I would move sliders left and right without really understanding what I should be doing and in what order in order to create a photograph out of the gray, dull, RAW image that I saw in front of me. After plenty of failed attempts, I realized that my process or lack thereof needed structure. A series of steps, each with its own clearly defined goal, so that anytime I would sit down to edit a photo, I would know where to start, where I was going next, and where I would ultimately finish. So today Im going to share with you my own 10 step RAW photo processing framework. It sounds rather official butits really not. Use guides To show or hide guides, choose View > Guides > Show Guides or View > Guides > Hide Guides. To change guide settings, choose Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid (Windows) or Illustrator > Preferences > Guides & Grid (Mac OS). To lock guides, select View > Guides > Lock Guides.
Create guides If the rulers aren't showing, choose View > Show Rulers. Position the pointer on the left ruler for a vertical guide or on the top ruler for a horizontal guide. Drag the guide into position. To convert vector objects to guides, select them and choose View > Guides > Make Guides.
Turn your Smart Guides on By default, Smart Guides are on. To make sure they are on, choose View > Show > Smart Guides. For this tutorial, you will also need your rulers visible. Choose View > Rulers to ensure that rulers are on.
If you want to lock your guides so you don't accidentally move them, you can press Ctrl Alt ; (Windows) or Command Option ; (macOS) or you can go to the View menu and choose “Lock Guides”.
