Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703 When using English measurements, ounces (oz) and fractions must be changed to decimal values. Then, calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lb) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703.
Using standard units, BMI = 703*pounds/inches^2. Using metric units, BMI = kg/m^2. Excel uses a default order in which calculations occur. If a part of the formula is in parentheses, that part will be calculated first.
For example, a person who weighs 180 lbs. and is 5 feet and 5 inches tall (65 inches total) would calculate their BMI in the following way: 180 x 703 = 126,540. 126,540 / 65 = 1,946.769.
With the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight in kilograms (kg) divided by height in meters (m) squared. Since height is commonly measured in centimeters (cm), an alternate formula can be useddivide weight in kg by height in cm squared, and multiply the result by 10,000.
From this study, which he hoped would allow him to determine the average man, he formulated what became known as the Quetelet formula, but which is now known as the BMI, and is calculated by dividing an individuals weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared.
Data from this study suggest that the optimum range of BMI levels for older adults is 3132 and 2728 kg/m2 for female and male, respectively.
