The benefit is found by multiplying the defined % (less than 2%) of the average monthly earnings over the last 5 years by the number of years worked for the company.
The unit benefit formula is a method of calculating an employers contribution to an employees pension plan based on years of service. The unit benefit formula means the company pays a percentage of the employees salary, which might range from 1.25% to 2.5%.
Accrued benefit cost method means an actuarial cost method under which units of benefits are assigned to each cost accounting period and are valued as they accrue; i.e., based on the services performed by each employee in the period involved.
A pension benefit formula that determines the benefit by multiplying a certain percentage (up to 2%) of the final average or best average earnings for a stated period before retirement by the years of service (i.e. monthly pension = 2.0% x average monthly earnings of last 5 years x years of service).
Accrued benefits are benefits that the employee has earned based on their service or other criteria, but that are payable to the employee at some later date. These types of benefits can include sick pay, personal time off, and other related benefits that employees earn or accumulate the longer they work.
Once eligibility starts, the employee will have an estimated accrued monthly benefit, based on their current salary and length of service. As the years pass, the accrued monthly benefit rises until the final amount is calculated based on the employees retirement date.
- Accrued Benefit: Normal Retirement Benefit x - (Years of participation as of date of termination)/ (Years of participation the participant would have had if the participant terminated at Normal Retirement Age).
