A font format is a specific file type(s) designated to hold font data, with a font itself being the manifestation of a typeface. In other words, for a typeface to be used, it first has to exist as a font. OpenType is the standard font format in common use. There are two subformats: TrueType (with the extension of .
Variable fonts—officially known as OpenType Font Variations—remove the explicit distinctions between different weights and styles, which have existed since the early days of typesetting. It's no exaggeration to say that this represents a huge leap forward in font technology in recent years.
As with regular OpenType fonts, variable fonts can be used as web fonts as-is, or preferably wrapped up as a WOFF2. If you want to use to a variable font as a web font, in your @font-face rule you should set the format to woff2-variations or truetype-variations .
In general, variable fonts improve performance because you only have to use one font file. Static fonts require a different file for each variation you want to use on the site, while variable fonts are dynamic in nature.
Variable fonts—or, more specifically, OpenType Font Variations—are a relatively new font format introduced in 2016 that allow one font file to contain multiple stylistic variations, and thus break down the strict delineations of “traditional” (static) fonts. Weight, width, style, optical size, etc.
So, how do we implement and use variable fonts? To use the font on your design software like Photoshop & Illustrator, you just need to the font like you would any other ones on your computer. The Adobe softwares now have a new option when you select a variable font in the font dropdown menu.
A TrueType font file is a binary file that consists of a sequence of concatenated tables. Each table is a sequence of words and has a name known as Tag . Each tag is of uint32 data type and consists of four characters.
If you want to use several variations of the same typeface, using variable fonts is definitely a good option. However, if you want to use a font in an ordinary way — for instance, the bold, italic, and bold italic variations — you may want to stick with the static version.
Executable software (machine language programs), most word processing, database, spreadsheet and multimedia files are binary files. However, text and source program files as well as HTML and XML files are ASCII text files, just plain text, not binary.
Open Settings. Select Display. Choose Font size and style. Select your choice of Font from the Font Style menu, and you're done.
