The OVERFLOW flag is the XOR of the carry coming into the sign bit (if any) with the carry going out of the sign bit (if any). Overflow happens if the carry in does not equal the carry out. - carry in is 1 - carry out is 0 - 1 XOR 0 = OVERFLOW!
The flag register is one of the special purpose register. The flag bits are changed to 0 or 1 depending upon the value of result after arithmetic or logical operations. 8086 has 16-bit flag register, and there are 9 valid flag bits.
The carry (C) flag is set when an operation results in a carry, or when a subtraction results in no borrow.
This flag is used in BCD (Binary-coded Decimal) operations. The status of this flag is updated for every arithmetic or logical operation performed by ALU. This flag is set to one if there is a CARRY from the lower nibble or BORROW for the lower nibble in binary representation. Else it is set to zero.
The carry (C) flag is set when an operation results in a carry, or when a subtraction results in no borrow. C is set in one of the following ways: For an addition, including the comparison instruction CMN , C is set to 1 if the addition produced a carry (that is, an unsigned overflow), and to 0 otherwise.
The direction flag control instructions are specifically included to set or clear the direction flag, DF, which controls the left-to-right or right-to-left direction of string processing. If DF=0, the processor automatically increments the string index registers, ESI and EDI, after each execution of a string primitive.
Carry Flag The carry flag is set if the addition of two numbers causes a carry out of the most significant (leftmost) bits added. 1111 + 0001 = 0000 (carry flag is turned on) The carry (borrow) flag is also set if the subtraction of two numbers requires a borrow into the most significant (leftmost) bits subtracted.
The carry flag enables numbers larger than a single ALU width to be added/subtracted by carrying (adding) a binary digit from a partial addition/subtraction to the least significant bit position of a more significant word.
Example: MVI A 30 (load 30H in register A) MVI B 40 (load 40H in register B) SUB B (A = A – B) These set of instructions will set the sign flag to 1 as 30 – 40 is a negative number. MVI A 40 (load 40H in register A) MVI B 30 (load 30H in register B)
In general, the carry flag is used to detect errors in unsigned arithmetic operations. The overflow flag is only used to detect errors in signed arithmetic operations.
