hello everyone and welcome to networks youtube channel last time we learned about encryption capabilities of ansible vault and also about special variable files but adding variables into playbook is not limited to using just variable files sometimes there might be a need to include variables in the playbook itself or even create them dynamically during the playbook execution there is a special module in ansible called setfact it is created for the purpose of defining variables in the playbook itself you just create names and assign values to variables that you can later reference in your playbook it might seem odd why we want to include the variables in the playbook itself when we have such a convenient way of adding them via variable files explicitly or implicitly but there is one more very useful property of setfact module it lets you manipulate your variables in different ways im going to demonstrate one of them soon but before lets introduce one more way of adding variables dyna

So instead of using setfact, you can use the file groupvars\all. yml to set variables for all hosts in your inventory. all is a default group for all host. from now all your playbooks can use these variables.
The setfact module takes key=value pairs or key: value (YAML notation) as variables to set in the playbook scope. The key is the resulting variable name and the value is, of course, the value of said variable. You can create multiple variables at once, by supplying multiple pairs, but do NOT mix notations.
Ansible setfact is different from vars, varsfile, or includevar where you know the variable value beforehand, whereas when using setfact, we can store the value after preparing it on the fly using certain task like using filters or taking subpart of another variable.
One such important module is setfact. This module is used to set new variables. These variables are set on a host-by-host basis which is just like ansible facts, discovered by setup module. These variables are available to subsequent plays in a playbook.
Apart from the fact that setfact is a task on its own and register captures the result of a task, is there any difference between the resulting variables scope or lifecycle (or anything else) for example.

The difference between facts and variables set is defined by their precedence, i.e. all variables are important, but some variables are more important than others. In your case, the same variable set as a fact (priority 19) would take precedence declared as a variable in a task (priority 17) or play (priority 12).
