Canadian companies that do business in the United States need an Employee Identification Number (EIN). An EIN identifies businesses and is the United States equivalent of a Canadian business number.
In order to obtain an EIN online, you will need a Social Security Number or U.S. address. However, the application for an EIN can be still mailed or faxed to the IRS if you do not meet these requirements.
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit number that IRS assigns in the following format: XX-X.
In order to get an Employer Identification Number for a Foreign Entity, you should look over Form SS-4 from the IRS, prepare all of the information youll need, and then call 267-941-1099. If you fill out the application online, your business needs to be located in the US or any US territories.
To obtain an EIN, a Canadian corporation must file Form SS-4 with the IRS. Obtaining an EIN can also be done by applying to the IRS on-line, fax, mail or telephone. We recommend Canadian corporations apply for the EIN by telephone, by contacting the IRS at 267-941-1099.
EINs can also be used by foreign entities any business based entirely in another country for paying taxes or claiming exemptions from IRS withholding pursuant to the terms of a tax treaty. The application for an EIN for international company operations is administered by the IRS through its official website.
International applicants may call 267-941-1099 (not a toll-free number) 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday to obtain their EIN. The person making the call must be authorized to receive the EIN and answer questions concerning the Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification NumberPDF.
