Early signs of congestive heart failure excess fluid in body tissues like the ankles, feet, legs, or abdomen. coughing or wheezing. shortness of breath. weight gain that cant be attributed to anything else.
Compensation in the body The bodys hormone and nervous systems try to make up for this. They increase blood pressure, hold on to salt (sodium) and water in the body, and increase the heart rate. These responses are the bodys attempt to compensate for the poor blood circulation and the backup of blood.
Therefore, the systemic responses (vascular constriction and increased blood volume) help to compensate for the loss of cardiac performance; however, these compensatory responses cause a large increase in venous pressure that can lead to edema.
Most often, heart failure is caused by another medical condition that damages your heart. This includes coronary heart disease, heart inflammation, high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, or an irregular heartbeat. Heart failure may not cause symptoms right away.
Compensation in the body The bodys hormone and nervous systems try to make up for this. They increase blood pressure, hold on to salt (sodium) and water in the body, and increase the heart rate. These responses are the bodys attempt to compensate for the poor blood circulation and the backup of blood.
Following this initial decline in pumping capacity of the heart, a variety of compensatory mechanisms are activated, including the adrenergic nervous system, the renin angiotensin system, and the cytokine system.
The sympathetic nervous system is activated in heart failure, via low and high pressure baroreceptors, as an early compensatory mechanism which provides inotropic support and maintains cardiac output.
With or without treatment, heart failure is often and typically progressive, meaning it gradually gets worse. More than 5 million people in the United States have congestive heart failure. Its the most common diagnosis in hospitalized patients over age 65.
Some of the signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure include: Shortness of Breath. If your loved one has CHF, they may experience shortness of breath. Fatigue. Edema (Swelling, in the Feet, Ankles, and Legs) Arrhythmia (Irregular Heartbeat) Persistent Cough. Wheezing. Changes in Urination. Swelling of the Abdomen.
Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle doesnt pump blood as well as it should. Blood often backs up and causes fluid to build up in the lungs (congest) and in the legs. The fluid buildup can cause shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. Poor blood flow may cause the skin to appear blue (cyanotic).
