In tennis, a “draw” is a schedule (or order) of matches to be played in a tournament. The draw is often determined by a literal draw of names at a draw ceremony.
If a tennis game ties at 40-all, no player can win by two points, so the game extends to a round called “deuce.” Deuce extends the game until one opponent wins with a two-point advantage. If the player serving wins one point, it's called “Advantage in,” or add-in for short.
The winner of each match is the 1st player to win 3 games. However, if the scores are tied at 2-2, then a player can win 4-2, or if players are still tied at 3-3 then the match is decided by a tie-break.
In tennis, the term Grand Slam refers to the accomplishment of winning all four major championships-the championships of Australia, France, Britain (Wimbledon), and the United States-in the same calendar season. The feat has been achieved six times (by five different players).
A bye in tennis is typically the result of specific draw sizes where the number of players does not allow for every player to participate in a first-round match. Here's a look at how many players receive a bye per draw size in singles: Draw of 28: the top 4 seeds awarded a bye.
To create a tennis draw, you first have to figure out how many players/teams to seed. Seeding means ranking the players, starting with the best. Count up how many players there are and divide by 4. If there is a remainder, add one to the quotient, and that gives you the number of seeds.
It goes like this: 1 seed goes at the very top of the draw. 2 seed goes to the very bottom, ensuring only a final between the Top 2 seeds. Seeds 3 and 4 are placed on opposite halves in a way that they could only meet the top 2 seeds in the SF.
In the main draw, as long as you keep winning your matches you will advance to the next bracket. Simple. Most platform tennis tournaments guarantee a minimum of three matches. To support this format they run a number of “back draws” into which losers move to get their additional matches.
Draw size is automatically determined by tournament desk based on the number of players in your main draw, for example: 1-4 players = Draw size of 4 players. 5-8 players = Draw size of 8 players. 9-16 players = Draw size of 16 players. 17-32 players = Draw size of 32 players.
There are 3 ways players can qualify: 1) rank among the top 104 players who sign up for the Grand Slam; 2) win 3 rounds in the qualifying; and 3) receive a wild card. A total of 128 players get to play in the main draw of each Grand Slam: 104 through ranking, 16 through qualifying, and 8 through wild cards.
