Intersection-Over-Union is a common evaluation metric for semantic image segmentation. For an individual class, the IoU metric is defined as follows: iou = true_positives / (true_positives + false_positives + false_negatives)
IoU is calculated by dividing the intersection area I of the two boxes A and B by the union area of the two boxes, i.e., I /(A + B − I ). A detected box is considered as a TP if the highest IoU of this box with any ground-truth boxes in the input GUI image is higher than a predefined IoU threshold.
Note: 0.5 IoU is typically considered a “good” score, while 1 is perfect in theory. No matter where you get the ground-truth data or how carefully you label, it's extremely unlikely to have the predicted output match the ground-truth bounding box coordinates.
In case there are 2 boxes that do not intersect, the area of their intersection would be 0, and therefore the IOU would also be 0. In case there are 2 boxes that completely overlap, the area of the intersection would be equal to the area of their union, and therefore the IOU would be 1.
Commonly, IoU > 0.5 means that it was a hit, otherwise it was a fail. For each class, one can calculate the. True Positive TP(c): a proposal was made for class c and there actually was an object of class c. False Positive FP(c): a proposal was made for class c, but there is no object of class c.

Intersection over Union (IoU) is used to evaluate the performance of object detection by comparing the ground truth bounding box to the preddicted bounding box and IoU is the topic of this tutorial.
IoU is calculated by dividing the overlap between the predicted and ground truth annotation by the union of these.

Intersection over Union (IoU) is used when calculating mAP. It is a number from 0 to 1 that specifies the amount of overlap between the predicted and ground truth bounding box. IoU is an important accuracy measure to track when gathering human annotations.
