The heading contains the return address with the date on the last line. Sometimes it is necessary to include a line before the date with a phone number, fax number, or e-mail address. Often there is a line skipped between the address and the date.
First include your name, address, phone number, and the date. This information should be located at the top of the page, either in the center, or indented on the right side of the paper. You then include the name and address of the person to whom you are sending the letter.
In Sample 1, you will see that there are two spaces between the address and the date; three spaces between the address and the salutation; two spaces between the salutation and the first body paragraph; two spaces between first, second, and third body paragraphs; two spaces between the body, the complimentary close,
Dateline: Three to six lines beneath the letterhead, flush left or right. The dateline contains the month (fully spelled out), day, and year. Recipient address: Three to six lines below the dateline, flush left.
Place your date 1 to 2 lines after the senders address. For example, if you skipped 1 line between the address and the date, skip 1 line between the date and the recipients information. Consistent formatting will make your letter look neat and organized.
Format. The date is generally written in full in a business letter. The usual North American style places the month before the day, with a comma between the day and the year: April 4, 2016.
The date appears at the left margin in full block style, but it can be placed on the right-hand side of the page to help fit in all the pieces of information required and make it easier to find correspondence filed by date.
Youre composing a formal letter or email. Where does the date go? The answer is right at the top! For an American audience, its usually formatted as Month Day, Year (e.g., August 30, 2023), while a British audience would expect it to be written as Day Month Year (e.g., 30 August 2023).
