XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
Simply put, XPS uses an x-ray beam to excite atoms on the surface of a solid sample, which spurs the release of photoelectrons. From there, the kinetic energy and the number of electrons that escape from the top 0 to 10 nanometers of the sample are measured.
Pass energy is a term used to define the resolution of an acquisition. To understand exactly what it is, we must consider the XPS analyser (figure 1): Figure 1: Hemispherical analyser(1) So here, we have 3 radii; R1 – the inner hemisphere, R2 – the centre of the hemisphere and R3 – the outer hemisphere.
The XPS spectrum contains peaks at 285.03 eV attributed to the binding energy of C1s, 103.29 eV to the binding energy of Si2p, 83.98 and 87.7 eV to the binding energy of Au4f7/2 and Au4f5/2, respectively, and 532.68 eV to the binding energy of O1s.
XPS is useful for quantitative analysis of surface composition and can detect all elements with the exception of hydrogen and helium through the detection of the binding energies of the photoelectrons.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. ... The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
In XPS spectra of materials, all binding energies should be corrected using a standard. Usually, carbon element with binding energy of C 1s = 284.6 eV is used as an internal standard. You should shift the binding energies of your samples based on this value.
Interpretation of XPS spectra. Adventitious carbon contamination is commonly used as a charge reference for XPS spectra. C1s spectrum for contamination typically has C-C, C-O-C, and O-C=O.
National Schools Observatory describes it as: "The Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) is a measure of the quality of an astronomical image based on how much the telescope and atmosphere have smeared a point source in an image over several pixels in the CCD." Simply put, it describes how much a point of light spreads out.
