While DOs and chiropractors may use some of the same techniques, there are distinct differences between them. OMM treats more than just joints. While chiropractors focus on your bones, DOs use OMM to prevent and treat health concerns affecting any part of the body.
OMM is a set of hands-on techniques that DOs use to apply pressure or force to any part of the body. This can: Relieve pain. Improve mobility and range of motion.
Both chiropractors and osteopathic doctors use musculoskeletal manipulation. However, the techniques and services can vary greatly.
Some OMT techniques are similar to those used by chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists, whereas others are unique to osteopathic physicians.
Also called an osteopath or DO, these doctors focus on the body, mind and spirit as part of one interconnected system. A doctor of osteopathy practices osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), a type of medicine that includes hands-on treatments. DOs have special training in healing the musculoskeletal system.
OMT, or osteopathic manipulative treatment (also called osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM)), is a hands-on treatment taught to all D.O.s, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine. OMT involves the physician using their hands to diagnose and then treat dysfunctions of the body.
"There is little evidence as yet that OMT is helpful for the treatment of any medical condition. There are several possible reasons for this, but one is fundamental: Even with the best of intentions, it is difficult to properly ascertain the effectiveness of a hands-on therapy like OMT.
There are various methods of delivering a high velocity thrust. Chiropractors are more likely to push on vertebrae with their hands, whereas osteopaths tend use the limbs to make levered thrusts. That said, osteopathic and chiropractic techniques are converging, and much of their therapeutic repertoire is shared.
Ultimately, manipulation tends to target the entire spine, but an adjustment focuses on a specific area or areas of the spinal region. Typically manipulation is used to provide short-term pain relief while a chiropractic adjustment offers long-term benefits.
OMM, also called Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), is a form of manipulation that: • Is the generic term used to refer to many different manipulation techniques. • Can be used to treat structural and functional issues in the bones, joints, tissues, and muscles of the body.
