bmi or body mass index is a measure of a persons body fat based on height and weight and a high bmi can increase a persons risk for certain diseases it is calculated by taking your weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in meters squared if youre using pounds for weight and feet or inches for height then we need to do some conversions lets say someone is 175 pounds and 5 foot 9. to convert pounds to kilograms one pound equals 0.4536 kilograms so you multiply by 0.453 so 175 pounds times 0.4536 equals 79.38 kilograms to convert feet to meters first convert feet to inches 12 inches in a foot so 5 times 12 equals 60 inches plus 9 inches equals a total of 69 inches one inch equals 0.0254 meters so multiply by 0.0254 so 69 times 0.0254 equals 1.75 meters now we have all that we need for the formula 79.38 kilograms divided by 1.7526 meters squared equals a bmi of 25.8 and here is the formula for bmi using common us metrics of pounds and inches here is a chart listing the wei

Only the upper end of the BMI scale has changed, with the categories of underweight, normal weight, and overweight remaining the same as the previous version. As such, the CDC advises doctors can still use the old chart for children who are not considered obese.
Though it has been used for decades as the go-to measurement for health based on body size, it has been widely criticized for its oversimplification of what being healthy really means. In fact, many claim BMI is outdated and inaccurate and shouldnt be used in medical and fitness settings.
In 1998, the U.S. National Institutes of Health brought U.S. definitions in line with World Health Organization guidelines, lowering the normal/overweight cut-off from a BMI of 27.8 (men) and 27.3 (women) to a BMI of 25.
12,22,34 Subsequently, in 1998, the cutoff point between normal and overweight was reduced to a BMI of 25 to bring it into line with the 4 categories in the WHO guidelines. 25,35 Parenthetically, this instantaneously converted millions of Americans from being normal weight to being overweight.
BMI was invented in the 1830s by a Belgian statistician, sociologist, astronomer and mathematician by the name of Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. It was known then as the Quetelet Index and was informed by Quetelets interest in finding lhomme moyen, or the average man.
Global age-standardised mean BMI increased from 217 kg/m2 (95% credible interval 213221) in 1975 to 242 kg/m2 (240244) in 2014 in men, and from 221 kg/m2 (217225) in 1975 to 244 kg/m2 (242246) in 2014 in women.
BMI Chart Find your height on the side (in metres on the left and in feet on the right) and draw a horizontal line across the chart. Find your weight (in kilograms across the bottom of in pounds across the top) and draw a vertical line across the chart. The shaded area where the 2 lines meet is your BMI.
