My name is Marc, and Im a product manager at Google Cloud. Today, well be walking through one of the top questions we get from customers. How can I add authentication and identity management to my own apps? Lets see how this looks in Google Cloud Platform. The first thing we have to do is enable Identity Platform. Now, you can see Ive got this pinned here, but it normally hides down below in the tool section of the left navigation. But I can also go to the Cloud Marketplace in order to enable Identity Platform. So lets go through that flow now. In the marketplace, if I search for identity and platform, youll be able to select the product and enable it, if its not enabled in your project. Google Workspace customers data is encrypted when its on a disk, stored on backup media, moving over the Internet, or traveling between data centers. Encryption is an important piece of the Google Workspace security strategy, helping to protect your emails, chats, Google Drive files, and other data.
In terms of authorization for Google Workspace APIs, a credential is usually some form of identification, such as a unique secret string, known only between the app developer and the authentication server. Google supports these authentication credentials: API key, OAuth 2.0 Client ID, and service accounts.
Before we actually get to implementing JWT, lets cover some best practices to ensure based authentication is properly implemented in your application. Keep it secret. Keep it safe. Do not add sensitive data to the payload. Give s an expiration. Embrace HTTPS. Consider all of your authorization use cases.
Step 2: Allow users to turn on 2-Step Verification Sign in to your Google Admin console. In the Admin console, go to Menu Security Authentication. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Check the Allow users to turn on 2-Step Verification box. Select Enforcement. Click Save.
To obtain credentials for your service account: In the Google Cloud console, go to Menu menu IAM Admin Service Accounts. Go to Service Accounts. Select your service account. Click Keys Add key Create new key. Select JSON, then click Create. Click Close.
2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your Google Account. In addition to your username and password, youll enter a code that Google will send you via text or voice message upon signing in.
Re-authorize Drive by navigating to a course and click Google Drive Authorize.
For authentication, Google APIs support two types of principals: user accounts and service accounts. Whether you use a user account or a service account to authenticate depends on your use case. You might use both, each at different stages of your project or in different development environments.
