Like EBS volumes, snapshots in AMIs can be encrypted by either your default AWS KMS key, or to a customer managed key that you specify. You must in all cases have permission to use the selected KMS key. AMIs with encrypted snapshots can be shared across AWS accounts.
All AMIs must adhere to the following security policies: AMIs must not contain any known vulnerabilities, malware, or viruses as detected by the self-service AMI scanning tool or AWS Security. AMIs must use currently supported operating systems and other software packages.
An AMI includes the following: One or more Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) snapshots, or, for instance-store-backed AMIs, a template for the root volume of the instance (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications).
AMI Types. AMI is divided into two categories: EBS - backed Instances. Instance Store - backed Instances.
To create a custom AMI Choose Launch Instance. Choose Community AMIs. If you identified a base Elastic Beanstalk AMI (using describe-platform-version ) or an Amazon Linux AMI, enter its AMI ID in the search box. Choose Select to select the AMI. Select an instance type, and then choose Next: Configure Instance Details.
Select the snapshot, and then on the Description tab, verify if Encryption is set to Encrypted or Not Encrypted.
We recommend the following guidelines for creating secure AMIs: Use the Guidelines for Shared Linux AMIs in the Amazon EC2 User Guide for Linux Instances. Architect your AMI to deploy as a minimum installation to reduce the attack surface. Disable or remove unnecessary services and programs.
Log on to the Amazon EC2 image by using SSH and complete the following steps: Edit the /etc/ssh/sshdconfig file. Update the following lines: PasswordAuthentication yes PermitRootLogin yes. Save the file. Run the following command: sudo service sshd restart.
An AMI owner can determine their instance availability through the following three launch permissions: Public, that grants instance launch permission to all AWS account holders. Explicit, that grants launch permission only to specific AWS accounts. Implicit, where only the AMI owner has permission to launch an instance.
AMI types are categorized ing to region, operating system, system architecture -- 32- or 64-bit -- launch permissions and whether they are backed by Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) or backed by the instance store.
